I kind of wanted to write the code for this and work on it myself, but frankly.. im not sure i have the time, and not sure i can pull it off on my own either... so figured i should mention it and hopefully i can help work on it.

so either this would be a ROLE... which either replaces the jester, OR is just another role... or this could be a modifier.

I played this game called "Feign", which is like town of salem, but Feign has its own unique role.. "The Insane".

Role Description:-

my best 2 experiences with it:-
1 - i was "crew", and i was playing a game of 5 people, KILLER, and 4 crew roles...INSANE, LOOKOUT, DOCTOR, RANDOM CREW.

  • killer killed a person, 4 left alive... we role claimed... 2 lookouts, 2 doctors.... clearly impostor is lying.. and the insane thinks they are telling the truth.
  • i got killed by the other doctor, who was actually the killer.. leaving 2 crew left, both claiming to be lookouts... but one is actually "the Insane".. they started arguing suggesting each other is the killer... (like a jester would cause such an argument), and the impostor voted with one of them, and won the game.

2 - i was "impostor", same settings as above, i killed 1 person, and then another... leaving me and two crew... the discussion started about who the killer is.. one of them says "i was checking out the guy who died, i saw no one go there". (thinking he was lookout)... and the other said they "blocked me from leaving my house" (thinking they were policeman).. so me knowing im the killer.. i took their information.. that they blocked me from leaving my house.. and cleared myself.. there in getting the other crew thrown out (who was truly, a lookout).. the Insane thought they were a crew policeman until the game ended with me being the impostor, and then it told them they were insane... they had no clue before this.

There was also a third game... which i liked, where in there was 2 insane and i was also crew, and we actually managed to work out who was the killer based off the fact of who was able to actually interact with who (the killer decided not to kill for some reason), so it shows that the insane can work out who they are.. eventually, given time and enough proof.

How the role could be implemented into TOU, and why it should be...
so lets start with how it could be implented... first, its a CREW role, their intentions are good, they are just misguided.

so, my initial thoughts on roles the insane could beleive they are (because they cant take on all of them obviously)... and either, they should only be able to be the roles if they are turned on.. or it should force the roles on to 50% minimum if the insane is on..
Morphling:- they get morph buttons and can morph, but only they see the morphling change... and they can also kill people.. they can kill anyone, and think they are a morphling, they get told they are impostor, and at the start of the game they see random people to be their impostor partners (if any).. but they can kill anyone.
Sheriff:- like the morphling, but they cant morph, they can still shoot anyone, thinking they are sheriff... but they are actually just an insane murderer.
Medic - they get a shield button, they see the shield, but there is no shield, they get a warning when the person is attacked if the medics settings allow.. basically they think they are medic, but they arent helping anyone.
Altruist - they find a dead body... and give their life up to revive the dead body.... only to find out they are just dead.. and insane.
Snitch - they complete their tasks and get told random people are impostors.... and so they press the meeting button and out them.
Executioner - they force out their target.. only to find out the game doesnt end, and they are actually just insane.
Seer - they reveal peoples roles/teams, but its not always correct.. infact its 50% likely to be correct.

you get the gist.. in the cases of all roles as i say.. the role should be on at least 5% chance of appearing, or be forced on to 50%, otherwise people can assume that they are insane if the role is off and they got it...

why this should be implemented into TOU
its commonly known, the jester is a bad role in that, it has people wanting to hide to stay alive., and thats boring, but i can understand why people want to hide, they are jester, all they can do is stay alive and get voted out.

my thoughts were, this is a better jester.. they win with crew.. but their role isnt so clear... they think they are impostor and kill randomly.. maybe even out themselves as a killer to their fake impostor partners...? maybe they are sheriff, and kill an innocent.. and claim sheriff, at which point someone else says "no im sheriff"... maybe they shield someone who dies.. and so they are like "im the medic... i shielded so and so, he must have gotten hit twice..".. etc.. which throws mass sus on them like an actual jester would receive sus.. but the thing is.. the jester steals the win from crew/impostors, the insane would just help the impostors win... unless they realise they are insane (for example, they witness the sheriff dying, while thinking they are sheriff.. they might assume it was a sweooper... but they might realise they are insane if they then shoot the person next to the real sheriff and that person dies.. after the sheriff died on them.

my point is, this is a jester that doesnt want to hide, they have different impulses... medic wants to sheild, sheriff wants to save the crew but kiills crew along the way, morphling wants to kill the crew while they are actually a crew themselves, they all have different impulses, but none of them include hiding (unless the medic... but the medic gets information from reporting bodies, so they are less likely to hide then a jester).

there are probably more ways of implementing this role, and better examples of why this would be an improvement on the jester role.. but i have typed a lot already, and frankly.. this is the sort of role that might need implementing for a few roles, and add ore roles to the mix of what it may be later...

as a modifier? - well the other idea is... an invisible crew only modifier.. so the game wouldent tell you you have a modifier at the start, or give you any information... but at the end of the game, you would be told you are insane... this maybe easier to implement, and then could be applied to only certain roles.. the point would be simple though..
1 - any killing role could kill anyone, even if they arent meant to.
2 - any visual changes, would only show up for the person who is insane (for example, an insane morphling wouldent actually be morphed, an insane camoflager, wouldent actually camo people, an insane covert, wouldent actually go invisible to other people.. an insane seer, wouldent actually show up as a seer to anyone... an insane jester.. wouldent actually win if voted out.. perhaps it would actually give the win to the impostors in the case off the jester? perhaps thats a bit ridiculous...?
3 - any roles the insane could be assigned to.. would have to either have an actual effect that happens, or a fake effect that only the insane can see, but everyone else will be like "did that happen?".. but it should be nothing they can 100% prove didnt happen... (for example, if they are a killing role, they have to be able to kill, they cant kill and the person suddenly be alive after that.. so the kill either has to be real.. or killing roles cant be insane.

I realise its a lot to balance regarding which roles could be insane.. and how they would all work, but, whether as a modifier, or an actual seperate role.. i feel the role would be a lot more fun than hiding all game.

so thats why i think its better than jester and maybe an improvement... maybe both would be desired, thats not my choice :)

as for why it could replace the glitch.. it sort of shares a place with the glitch, this could be a killing role, which is on the crew side, but effectivly does the same as the glitch, kills indiscriminatly in the name of crew, rather than themselves.

these are just ideas... please feel free to check out this video for Feign.. the insane part is from 1min.. ensue long argment about who is insane... either way, i hope the idea is liked, i bought feign literally because of the insane role, my group played with 5 people and really enjoyed the game and i think 90% of that enjoyment was just the possibility that someone (or multiple people) was completely insane
