catch all errors and display user friendly error messages.

Error messages are not user friendly or intuitive.

We should make a focused effort to deal with additional cases on a per-call basis, to ensure everything is covered. Just hard to elevate to high priority. And for most things, the basic handling is in good shape. I think the biggest problem is what to do about artifact editing errors. That is an entire design discussion, and backend needs to provide more information.
