brightr

Smoooothly adjust screen brightness on Linux with ease.

Requirements

  • brightnessctl

  • bash

Installation

  1. Save the brightr script to your desired location, e.g., ~/path/to/brightr.sh.

  2. Make the script executable:

    chmod +x ~/path/to/brightr.sh

Usage

brightr {up|down} <percentage> [duration] [notify]
  • up|down:

    • Mandatory: Direction to change brightness.

  • percentage:

    • Mandatory: Integer percentage to increase or decrease brightness.

  • duration:

    • Optional: Decimal duration between steps (default is 0.02 seconds).

  • notify:

    • Optional: Send notification with final brightness level.

Examples

Increase brightness by 10% with default duration:

./brightr.sh up 10

Decrease brightness by 20% with a duration of 0.05 seconds:

./brightr.sh down 20 0.05

Increase brightness by 5% and send a notification:

./brightr.sh up 5 0.02 notify

WM Integration

As an example, you can integrate brightr to Sway!

bindsym XF86MonBrightnessUp exec ~/path/to/brightr.sh up 10 0.02 notify
bindsym XF86MonBrightnessDown exec ~/path/to/brightr.sh down 10 0.02 notify
