Vim goes unresponsive after installation on macos 10.15.6 #134

Tried to do a fresh install on vim 8.1 with python3.8.6 but I after the plugins install I just get a blank, unresponsive screen with a blinking cursor. What gives?

vim --version | grep python gives

+cmdline_hist      -langmap           +python/dyn        +visual
+cmdline_info      +libcall           -python3           +visualextra
