ASCII Planets still relies on some mechanics and themes from Empires.

I would like to update the theme to be more about making it to outer space.

  • culture can be changed to something else
  • taxation and conscription seem not fully time period appropriate
  • happiness/unhappiness can convert to something else--the future doesn't care about our feelings, nor do the robots that rule our lives
  • technology can be expanded or focued on more
  • trade seems relevant still, but still has a planet-specific feel
  • astronauts/population is a holdover/quick thematic translation--y more about the researchers/pilots. Why is an astronaut working in a lab or factory?
  • military still makes sense but could become the Space Force

this also opens the opportunity to adjust the spacing and how elements fit on the screen. I imagine a better flow: left-to-right, like reading a book. A player starts at the top and works their way down and that completes a "turn." It may not fully work, but once the elements are changed, they will likely need to be moved to a different on-sheet position.
