Borders?

I have been reviewing this plug-in and tinkering with a thousand-and-one approaches to have cells with borders. I have found that: with border-collapse: collapse that is impossible (of course), but with border-collapse: separate, the four areas of the table go badly out of alignment. Do you have any suggestions or ideas how I might proceed?

Background: the reason I need cell borders is that, for the application I'm retrofitting, cells have their background painted various colors. The problem is, when several are next to each other, they are hard to distinguish.
