Microsoft PowerToys version

v0.8.01

Installation method

PowerToys auto-update, Microsoft Store

Running as admin

Yes

Area(s) with issue?

System tray interaction

Steps to reproduce

Right click the tray.
Choose either Settings or Quick Access.

✔️ Expected Behavior

Settings or Quick access opens

❌ Actual Behavior

The window for either will then open.
- Quick access an empty black box in the right place
- A window as an empty box with all the settings visible.
- or
- A settings window. This window will work but if you try to move the window the window will freeze and close

The item will pause for about 10 seconds, while not allowing any interactions.
Then close.

NOTE: Even though this happens the underlying functionality from PowerToys seems to work perfectly. I have not seen any issue despite continually getting the above error, simply because I use them and have not needed the settings. I encountered it this time as I wanted to specifically look at the settings for FancyZones, which I have not changed for some time.

Reviewing the Event log there a 328 Application errors noted over the last 3 months. These are as follows:

I have done an SFC /scannow.
I have unistalled PowerToys (removing any registry entries) and reinstalling from Microsoft store. After the reinstall it opened with the settings window. Once closed, it reverted back to the previous behaviour and will not start. It also added a new eventlog entry the same as the above.

Other Software

I do not believe this is interaction with other software. I have tried closing all applications in the system tray but the issue still occurs.

I have seen a similar issue in the past with the photos app closing in this way in an unexplained manner. Once I have sent this I will disable all start apps but PowerToys and reboot and see if this changes the issue.

Checked those : No suggestion of a solution here but I have now read about reportbug and generated one.
