I feel like this happened after an Android update but could be wrong.

Sleep mode shows no face. Reproducible by covering your watch to sleep it. Face goes black.

I'm not sure how to find Wear app version. But I used the first dev one with processes in foreground to stop watch treatments from failing.

This is expected behavior,
Try setting watch to "always on" and on watch face customization set the option "Simplify UI".

(Note that setting watch to "always on" will shorten battery life)

My other watch faces dim. I also notice this abruptly started happening after I made no changes to the settings. Something changed. Also it's not waking very easy. Not shown here but often takes several arm motions or taps.
