sanity check on startup: make sure there are no existing plot nodes
use SliceLogic to set the offset correctly to the native spacing (see sliceUpdate function in the GUI code)
check on turning off the side column (if we want that)

check on turning off the side column (if we want that)

This was tried adequately during development, however, no option was found.
