Maybe use https://github.com/rooklift/chessboardjs in which case:

Fix everything that accesses .state directly, remembering that the new state holds numbers
Replace calls to .piece() with .getchar()
~~Let index_from_args() (in that repo) take a Point~~ (done)
Anything else?
